By George Peper and the Editors of Golf Magazine Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1988
In commemoration of the centenary of the St. Andrews Golf Club in New York – America’s oldest golf club – this book was meant as a definitive history of the game in the U.S.A. during that time. As a contributing editor to GOLF Magazine at the time, I was asked to write Chapter 5, The Course of Architecture. It was something of a nerve-wracking experience for me, because writing about history in a publication like this requires getting the history right, and my fast-and-loose associations had to be thoroughly vetted prior to publication.
