More than a hundred people from all across golf were asked to write a short essay about what made St. Andrews special to them. My own piece, written about my experience there after college in the summer of 1982, focused mostly on my relationship with the greenkeeper, Walter Woods, and what I learned from him about sustainability, in the days before we Americans had a term for it.
