Peter Burford contacted me originally about publishing The Confidential Guide. I wasn’t ready to go there yet, and neither was he, but I noted that there hadn’t been a book about the practice of golf architecture since the Golden Age of the 1920’s, and we agreed there might be a market for one again.
Still in print 28 years later, the Anatomy has sold nearly 50,000 copies, not counting translations in Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Spanish, and Finnish (!). Featuring drawings by my then-associate Gil Hanse, and a Foreword by Ben Crenshaw, it’s a very thorough look at how golf courses are designed and built, and a precursor of the modern renaissance of minimalist design. You can buy it from Burford Books, or directly from me, here.
